THE STORIES OF THE SECESSIONISTS

The remaining officers of the "American" Salvation Army met at Saratoga on January 9, 1890, to reorganize. William Grattan was elected General. They formally reincorporated in 1891. However, this organization ceased operations in 1893. Reverend William Grattan (the former General) later wrote: "We closed up the work. I laid the matter before our Trustees, and we decided it best to stop, but took no formal action, only to write the Officers that we could not go on, and some went to the original Salvation Army. We had no funds to go on. We owned no property. … The work was entirely suspended." On March 10, 1908, Reverend Grattan, as the last remaining Trustee of the organization, turned its charter over to Evangeline Booth (the National Commander of the "World-Wide" Salvation Army), conveying "vested rights and title as legal successor" to her.

Moore's followers carried on for several years, but the organization slowly died out. Part of it continued under Lt.-General Milton Light in the South and New England as the "Christian Crusaders", but this organization also disappeared. The former General, Reverend Thomas Moore died in the pulpit of the First Baptist Church of Harper, Kansas, on January 7, 1898.

Various organizations, some using the name of the Salvation Army, some using similar names, continued to appear into the first decades of the twentieth century. Some were started by remaining officers of the "American" Salvation Army, some by sincere imitators, some by frauds. Some quickly disappeared; others required legal action to protect both the legitimate Army and the public.

The last descendant of Moore's organization was incorporated as the "American Salvation Army" on April 4, 1900. After successful litigation by the "World-Wide" Salvation Army, this organization reincorporated as the American Rescue Workers on April 12, 1913.
